RMS Pins a Hit at NSW Camporee
Risk Management Service (RMS) launched a creative new initiative at the recent NSW Pathfinder Camporee, helping leaders and young people put a spotlight on risk and safety in a fun and engaging way.
Two new collectible pins – Hazard Hunter and Safety Angel – were introduced at the event and could be earned by completing two colourful, illustrated worksheets designed to test and grow participants’ safety knowledge.
The activities were included in the Camporee booklet and quickly caught the attention of both Pathfinders and leaders eager to give them a try.
The Hazard Hunter activity challenged participants to identify potential risks in a detailed campsite scene, spotting anything that could cause illness, injury or damage. Common examples included a tent pitched beneath a dead tree, an unsupervised child near a lake and overflowing rubbish in the camping area.
Once hazards were identified, the Safety Angel activity guided participants to think about what actions to take if someone became ill or injured. For many, it was a great refresher after completing their First Aid honour; for others, it was an introduction to essential first aid concepts.
With pin trading being a long-standing Camporee tradition, the RMS pins were a hit from day one.
“The RMS pins were very popular,” said Dejan Stojkovic, Youth Director for the Greater Sydney Conference. “People were coming to the camp office all week with their worksheets, eager to check their answers and collect their pins!”
In collaboration with GSC Youth Department, the initiative was designed and developed by RMS Senior Risk Officer – Communications & Engagement, Linzi Aitken.
“Often risk and safety can feel heavy and onerous,” Ms Aitken said. “But when everyone does their part and it becomes second nature, it can help lighten the burden on others. The pins are a fun way to reinforce that idea and keep safety front of mind for all.”
RMS hopes the new pins and activities will continue to be used at future events to promote a culture of risk awareness, safety and care across the Adventist community.
